Updates!

Hi! Sorry to be away for a few days! We were busy moving. Plus, we're currently without wifi at our house in Maryland .. not good for bloggers!! The internet on our phone is also VERY slow at our MD house. So we're hoping to get wifi in the next few days.

For today, two things.

1. We just finished up our paint project for tomorrow's #cwts2014 post! Here's a sneak peek (the rest has to do with this) .. remember that $3 painting from my thrift store tips and tricks post? It's looking MUCH better! I just spray painted the frame and mat board white (leaving the corners as is) and painted a few dots on a canvas. I've been pinning lots of dotted things recently, so I had to give it a try!

Ranunculus is one of my favorite flowers - so happy to see it in store. btw .. it was snowing yesterday and I'm in shorts and flip flops today, hopefully the warmer weather is here to stay!

2. If you didn't see my post at Infarrantly Creative last week, make sure to stop by!

We made this tiered light out of aluminum flashing and a few other materials. Tutorial here! I'm obsessed :)

End Table to Nightstand | Pottery Barn Ludlow Trunk Knockoff.

Yesterday, you may have noticed that our campaign chest got a little lift!

Today I'm sharing how to make a simple metal base for a table - using aluminum strips and rivets. This would be perfect to make a trunk or chest a little higher or if you have a top and need a simple base. My chest is pretty light so aluminum was a good option. For something heavy, you probably want to use steel and screws and nuts (like the base for our herringbone driftwood table) If you missed the original tutorial at Infarrantly Creative, see how we did it!

For the past month or so I've been using my campaign chest as an end table in my living room. I loved the idea of it as a nightstand, but I prefer my nightstand about level with the mattress. Inspired by Pottery Barn's Ludlow Trunk, (thanks diydeeds on instagram for mentioning that!) adding a simple metal base, made it the perfect nightstand height!

Want to make your own? Here's how we did it!

Materials needed:

3/4" aluminum angle (36" x3)
1" aluminum straight (36")
Rivet gun
1/8" Rivets
Gold spray paint
Dark wax
Jig saw with fine metal blade
Drill

First, we measured the cuts needed for the angle pieces (4 to go around the base (the chest sits in the angled pieces + the 4 legs.)

With a blade designed to cut metal, we made the cuts with the jigsaw. Ideally we would have used a chop saw (with a blade designed to cut metal) but we currently don't have one, so the jigsaw was a good substitute.

Next, on the 4 legs, we measured and drilled holes for the rivets to go through. Then we taped (to hold them in place) the base on the bottom of the chest and held the legs up and marked the holes. Then we drilled the holes to connect the base to the legs.

Next, we connected the 4 legs with an x at the bottom. We used 1" straight strips of aluminum - since it goes diagonally to the 3/4" angle, the 1" fills the space best. We held the straight piece under the angle and marked the cut, so it fit perfectly. We cut a small angle piece to connect the straight piece to the angle legs, and drilled a hole at each end to connect them.

We used a rivet gun to connect the pieces together - it's super easy to use!! I can't wait to try it on more projects!

Here's a few close ups to show you how it all fits together (there is also a rivet in the center of the x)

To finish it, I spray painted it gold and once dry, I mixed a little stain with wax to deepen it.

And that's it! The chest fits perfectly inside and it's completely removable so if I want to use it as an end table again, all I have to do is pull it out. Super easy!

Cost for the metal was ~$16 and rivets were ~$2.50 (used 20) so total cost for the base was about $18.50 depending if you have the rest of the materials on hand.

I love our new nightstand!

Now our room is completely bare .. the movers came yesterday and cleared out most things. I made sure to tell them how the chest pulls out of the base, so it wouldn't go flying. I'm sure they thought I was a little overprotective crazy since I did this for almost everything, but I think they would understand if they knew how many hours we've put into everything :)

Also, at noon today, I'm sharing my knockoff project at East Coast Creative, you won't want to miss it!

Spring Trends for the Home | Giveaway $150 Target or West Elm Gift Card

Today I'm sharing a fun spring trends collaboration with 15 DIY + Design bloggers and Coupons.com! Also, up for grabs is a $150 gift card to Target or West Elm!!

This spring, I'm loving light interiors with pops of color and pattern! I recently purchased these Threshold Kilim Poufs from Target while they were on sale. You all know that I love a good sale! :) Originally $69, they were marked down to $48. Prior to checking out, I always do a quick search for coupon codes, most of the time I'll find one that will save at least $5-$10. At checkout, I used a coupon found on coupons.com for a $10 gift card when you spend $50 or more!! Check out Target coupon codes here.

I love having a bench at the end of the bed to throw extra pillows or a blanket. Annabelle also likes sleeping here too .. sometimes, when she does, my legs thank me - she's a bed hog! They are great since they are so versatile - perfect for extra seating or a lift up to reach something high - they are also light, so they move easily from room to room.

I love the texture!

Prior to purchasing the poufs, I got the perfect start with Crane and Canopy's Linden Coral Duvet - I love the crispness of the white and the pop of coral. I also added a coral and blue ikat pillow from TJ Maxx. The polka dot mint euro shams were made from a scarf found at World Market (last year).

and nothing says spring like tulips! It's finally starting to get sunny and warm(ish)! I love how bright and fresh my bedroom feels :)

Want to know the best part? Coupons.com is giving away a $150 gift card to Target or West Elm to start your spring home refresh!!

Friday Five

Last week a few of you mentioned that you weren't a huge fan of Friday Finds, which got me thinking that there was a little room for improvement.. I love sharing my recent favorite finds, so I'll keep doing that, but only one or two, mixed for a few other tips + tricks and other favorites from the week. Here's the broad categories 1// home decor - anything home related! 2// tip + trick - something that I've picked up along the way (probably DIY related) 3// sarah's pick - anything random :) 4// around the web - projects that have inspired me 5// friday find - my favorite furniture or home accessory of the week!

So here's what's caught my eye recently!

I recently found Priley Lane - a custom US furniture company, where each piece is handmade just outside of Boston. When I first saw their website it was love at first sight! Most of their furniture is customizable with a variety of bold colors, and finishes. They even have a lacquer linen and grass cloth finish - swoon!!

Here are a few of my favorites.

1. Brighton Bamboo Chair // 2. Cambridge Console Table // 3. Germaine Dining Table // 4. Spring Side Table

I don't know about you, but we work on projects all over the house. Mostly because we don't have a garage right now, but also because it's more comfortable working inside with climate control and tv :) Instead of putting the tools away everyday mid-project, I like to keep the ones I'm using nearby in a basket. That way they're easy to find and not spread all over the room. You can also layer a blanket on top if you want them completely hidden.

I've been a long time fan of seltzer water. My parent's started drinking it several years ago, and I've been hooked every since! I love it plain or with a tiny splash of juice. If you're not familiar with seltzer water, it's carbonated water with a light flavor, no sugar, no artificial sweetner and no sodium. I was never a huge fan of soda, but now, after drinking seltzer water, soda is WAY too sweet, I don't like it at all. David's parents recently started drinking it too, and his Mom now thinks that soda tastes too sweet as well .. so if you're looking to kick the soda habitat, try seltzer water! It may take you a week or two to convert.. and you may have a new addiction, but at least it's healthy!

My fav is La Croix, it is SO good! The liter size (typically store brand) is the cheapest way to go. You can typically get a liter for .75 - 1.00 at any grocery store.

Kristin from The Hunted Interior knocks it out of the park every single time! Love how she transformed a closet into her work space by simply adding a long Ikea counter top. Brilliant!! Check out all the details here (please pin from original source)

via the hunted interior

Safavieh Dhurrie gray + ivory runner. LOVE the pattern!! I want this in our new house!

Target Threshold White and Natural X-Base table I've been loving white with natural wood recently! This would make a great low nightstand (height is 22", check with your mattress height) or an accent table next to a sofa!

I hope you enjoy the new format for Friday's post! Let me know in the comments if you have any suggestions.

Hope you all have a great weekend! The movers are coming Monday and then we'll be spending a mini vacation at the Great Wolf Lodge (the lazy river is calling my name!) till David finishes up work on Wednesday. Then we're headed to Maryland to work on our new house!

Tips + Tricks | Thrift Shops

If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably noticed that I've traded my gorgeous photos of the beach for (equally gorgeous?) photos of thrifting. In California, I rarely found anything good thrifting and if I did, it was pricey! Craigslist was ok, but that's another post ..

(based on the survey last week, a lot of you wanted hear more about how I pick things, so hopefully this helps! Let me know if you have more ?s)

Today I'm going to share a few tips and tricks that I've picked up along the way. (Plus you'll get to see some of my favorite finds while in Ohio!)

1. Timing is everything. Think about when you would donate things .. probably on Saturday or Sunday, right? I've picked some of my best finds on Sunday or Monday morning. Going early on the day after things are donated is often your best shot. When I was in Maryland, I missed out on two amazing pieces because I went on Thursday and Friday (faux bamboo dresser and knockoff (or at least it better have been .. I didn't want to look too carefully) Eames lounge chair with the dreaded SOLD sign on them.. This isn't to say that you can't find great things Thursday/Friday, it's just not as likely. *Update: this is what I've found; however, every store is different. Learn when your store restocks. It may be in the middle of the week!

Also, think about the weather, is it cold, snowing or raining? People are more likely to donate when the weather is nice, so that's when you want to go! Hello, spring cleaning?? Can't wait :) Winter has been extremely slow here, I guess people don't want to drag their old furniture out in frigid temps. I can't blame them ..

2. Frequency. While it's important to think about when people donate, it's also important to go often. My current favorite thrift shop is right down the street from me, so I'll often stop and do a quick scan when I'm nearby.

3. Location. If it's in a bad section of town, it will most likely have junk. Nicer areas (bonus for retirement spots) is where you'll probably find the best stuff. We're currently living in a vacation/retirement area, so the thrifting is a lot better here than 20 minutes down the road where the main town is.

4. Be friendly. Ok, this is applicable for anywhere you go .. but yes, while thrifting too. Becoming friendly with the associates may give you extra discounts, peeks into what they've just gotten in, or maybe even email notifications. This obviously depends store to store, but you never know.

5. Look for sales. My Goodwill colors their tags, and each week rotates a color at 50% off. My favorite is to buy a bunch of mismatched frames at 50% off and then paint them. All the frames that I've gotten in Ohio have been .50 to $5.00.

6. If you like it, grab it because it probably won't be there when you get back!

Now, once you're there, how do you differentiate junk from potential ..

7. Look for lines. Look past the walkers and cheap kid furniture and look at those GORGEOUS arms and the $5.99 price tag!  The back needs a lot of help .. we'll replace the spindles and top piece with straight wood and place a loose cushion on front OR hide it by upholstering it. For the seat, we'll replace it with webbing since it dry rotted .. here's a similar makeover.

The detail on the legs is what sold me on the chair below .. plus I love the arms (which ended up being a major pain to upholster!)

after here
8. Look for character. Those arms! Since we build a lot of things, we also think about the ease (and cost) of making it ourselves. I'm not a fan of the front legs, so I have plans to update them with something cleaner lined. But I did take that into account when deciding to purchase. These were $35 each - worth it for me! Note: the upholstery was dated, but in great shape, so I was hoping to reuse the foam .. once we got it in the car, we realized that it smelled like smoke. Since we had to throw it out, purchasing new foam was an added cost. If that's a deal breaker, you may want to get a closer sniff .. if it's in good shape and if you dare ..

9. Look for quality. Is it solid wood? Does it have dovetail drawers? Do all the drawers work? Are there dents and scratches? All these things are relative to the price, but make sure to take into account the time that it will take to fix .. I've gotten a few pieces that took entirely too much time to fix, so make sure to look past the potential and think about what it will take to fix it.

good as is, but the price was a little high considering I didn't have a place for it

good shape, BAD paint job .. you'd probably have to sand it all the way down. $350 for the pair .. too high for me

10. Think about the worst case scenario. If my plan doesn't work out, what can I do with it?

I picked up this coffee table for $7 .. I could easily sell the casters on eBay for $10-20 or use them for a future piece. ($7 is a small investment, but also think about with some pricier, is it easy to re sell if you don't have time to refinish it?) Or this lamp, I wasn't sure about the shape, but the two pulls could easily be used on a piece of furniture. (lamps in the photo were $5 for the pair .. they could be easily updated with spray paint!)

11. Look for potential.

Clean lines, but low, so add legs! After here

Love the clean lines, but the top is laminate. So if painting, make sure to use a good primer for adhesion. I left these since I didn't really need them and the quality wasn't amazing.

Clean lines! The campaign chest is missing one handle and a little beaten up, but for $15, YES! The top of this $9.99 coffee table is laminate, but since I'm upholstering it, no problem. I love that it's super long, 60".

$3 massive frame. Swap out the art, paint the frame (not the corners) and it's instantly updated!

$65 dresser. I also included a close-up of the leg detail .. this is what sold me on this one! It's is a 9 drawer dresser (the bottom looks like doors) .. still deciding what to do, the bottom 6 drawers, look busy, so I think a solid paint would visually keep it simpler, but I love the veneer detail on the top drawers .. still deciding on this one.

11. Think about time and cost invested. I'm still working on this one .. often I only think about the end result and not how much time it will take to refurbish. I touched on this in 9, but it needs it's own number. Will it need a light sanding or full sanding? How long will it take to fix the broken drawer? I don't like the legs, how easy are those to swap? The corner is broken off? Is it fixable? How long will that take? Probably the most time consuming DIY is upholstery, think about how easy it would be to put back together .. simple is better. Think about cost of supplies and where you'll get them too!

Most importantly, don't get discouraged! I probably only find something 20-30% of the time (less in winter) so it takes persistence :) BUT nothing beats the rush of seeing something from the front door, running towards it, and seeing an insanely low price tag. You never know what you'll find!!
