I've been looking for a large rug for our bedroom for a little bit. This week I found this beauty on Overstock .. I've found that they have a good selection and their prices are pretty competitive, especially for a designer rug. Also check your local Home Goods, you can typically find an 8x10 rug for $300-$400!

How great is this bookcase by Camille Styles!? Want to replicate in your home? Try organizing your books by color, mix in boxes of a similar hue in a variety of shades, add in decorative objects in a variety of finishes, shapes, and scale. Finally, add in a little life with small textural plants!

The other weekend we found a vintage tulip table at a consignment shop .. I was so excited, but when I walked over I saw the dreaded sold sign :(

Ikea sells a knock off version, but $199 seems a little high for Ikea (or maybe I'm just cheap) .. I'll keep looking, hopefully I'll find a vintage one soon!!

I hope you all have a great weekend!! :)

Poppy Red Campaign Desk

Today I'm sharing our new campaign desk! A few months ago, I found several Bernhardt Campaign pieces on Craigslist. I would have preferred brass hardware and the wood veneer had a weird texture .. so that wasn't ideal, but at $30 to $40 each, I decided it was still worth it!

Before:

We preferred the desk without a hutch, so we have plans to repurpose that!

For a full tutorial on how to paint campaign furniture and polish hardware, see this post. I still highly recommend the tips shared in that post, but since Sherwin Williams Pro Classic can't be mixed in deep, saturated colors, I used something else for the top coat.

First, what paint NOT to use: Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel (I LOVE Sherwin Williams Pro Classic - I use it all the time for furniture .. but this is nothing like that) I was warned in the store that since I was going over white primer it would take several coats .. 5 coats later, it still wasn't solid. The paint was translucent looking .. maybe this would work for white over white, or a tinted red primer/red paint, but definitely not white primer/red paint. Also, I didn't like how it went on or how it looked/felt after drying 24 hrs ..

So I did a custom mix of Rustoleum Gloss Sunrise Red and  Rustoleum Gloss Sunburst Yellow (oil based) Maybe 70% red and 30% yellow.. it looks super saturated and bright, but in person it is a little more mellow, I'd describe it as a poppy color.

(Prior to painting, this required A LOT of sanding .. the veneer was textured, so we sanded it till it was basically smooth with the orbital sander)

This is my first time using an oil based paint on furniture, but after painting our mantel, I had a good idea of how it would go on.

Here's a few things to know about oil based paint prior to using it:

- Oil based paint is a pain to clean up (so brushes will need to be cleaned with mineral spirits or thrown away)

- It is stinky - so painting outside is a must!

- It has a slow drying time - 24 hours between coats, this also allows more time for dust to get stuck in the paint, so a debris free area is best. Also, prior to using it, the paint should cure for at least a week

- It covers SO well, you will most likely only need 2 coats.

- The key to getting a smooth finish is not over brushing (natural bristle brush works best) only go over an area with a few passes and move on, leave the brush strokes, they will self level. Apply a thicker coat to horizontal surfaces and thinner coats on vertical surfaces to prevents drips.

- It is a great way to get a super durable, glossy, lacquer like look!

The gallery wall above was centered around this print from Artfully Walls - love how it picks up the red tones in the desk.

This print is a part of the Artfully Walls and Better Homes and Gardens collaboration (as seen in the November BHG issue)  I was provided the print to share my styling tips in an upcoming digital styling session with 6 designers (on Artfully Walls a little later! I'll share the link when it's up!)

The Dorsey gold leaf diy art is still one of my favorites, tutorial here.

Eucalyptus from Trader Joes, deer head from Target's Christmas collection. Shelves were made by us for the BHG Stylemaker challenge, starburst mirror was on clearance for $8.83 at Home Depot

Chinese Chippendale chair found at a thrift store this summer .. it still needs a cushion, I might paint it .. might not .. Either way, LOVE it!!

I'm looking forward to adding a few more frames and items to the shelves - one of my favorite things about gallery walls is the flexibility to add to them! But for now, I'm loving this bright corner in our TN rental!

Nashville Flea Market | Guide + My Picks

If you follow me on Instagram, than you probably know that we went to the Nashville flea this weekend! Thanks for the tips, Wills Casa! I've never been to a flea market this large .. I wanted to move quickly to find the good stuff, but I also didn't want to look anything over ..

If you go, here's what to expect:

1. Parking costs $5
2. It's huge, so expect lots of junk (i.e. dollar store items) mixed in with the treasures
3. It's on the fairgrounds, so it's throughout buildings and outdoor areas, no loop or organized rows (I hope we saw everything!)

Overall, I found the prices kinda high (but there was a lot of staff there, so I'm sure booths were expensive to rent) But they were still reasonable if you find that one statement piece that will make the room! I went in looking for a real bargain verse specific pieces, so we didn't end up getting anything, but it was fun to look!!

Here are a few things that caught my eye! I'll add prices where I can remember ..

Wood slat chairs (I think $125/pair)

Italian Tole Chandelier (I'd love to see this painted one color $125)

Huge metal tray (I can't remember the price, but I kinda regret not getting it .. this would look amazing over a sofa or as a coffee table with the addition of legs)

Ceramic anatomy head (David thought this was a little weird, but I think it would be fun on a bookcase)

Vintage wood stools (I love the ones with the angled metal supports)

Vintage sign letters ($20 a piece, pretty reasonable!)

Glass chandelier

Hanging chair ($250) Isn't it gorgeous? I'd love to have one of these .. I'm still holding out for a super good deal!!

Do you have any favorite flea markets? I'd love to hear your suggestions!

Custom Long Drapery Rod For Under $20

Today I'm sharing how to make a custom drapery rod (~30') for under $20 - you'll never buy one again!

First, you'll need 1/2-in electrical tube conduit - it's only $2.48 for a 10' section (super affordable!)

For the hanger, you will need the following parts:

Plan on one for about every 10' section - so that the conduit can be joined inside the hanger.

Since we wanted it black, it would need to be painted, so we weren't concerned about the metals matching. But the copper hanger could be swapped with a steel hanger - it was a little more bulky, so we preferred this one. Also, you could most likely find a steel tube to fit over the threaded rod (try Ace Hardware) but we couldn't find one locally, so we just went with a plastic tube.

Sorry for the nighttime IPhone photos! We primarily worked on this at night ..

The process was pretty simple - we planned to place a hanger on each post and measured the conduit (the rod) to fit (for each exposed end, we inserted a copper end cap - found in the plumbing section). The threaded rod was cut into 4" sections with the angle grinder and a cutoff wheel (clamped to the bench) The plastic tube was also cut into 4" sections. (Note: I know Home Depot has a pipe cutter, so they'll cut it in store for you, maybe they have a machine to cut the threaded rod in store? I'm not sure, but might be worth asking if you don't have a tool to cut metal at home.)

Then the threaded rod just screwed into the ceiling flange, the plastic tube slipped over, then the split ring hanger screwed into place. (Note: when the conduit is placed inside the hanger, the split ring hanger  sits with about a .25" gap, so it doesn't sit flush as shown above)

Next, prep for paint. Sand (as much as possible, the metal isn't super important, but you want to give the plastic a good sanding since it's glossy) Also, it's easier to sand the plastic tube prior to installing it, so I'd recommend trying that.

For paint, we chose gray auto primer and satin enamel paint. We found this combo very durable, so I'd recommend!!

To paint, we set up two ladders (with paper over top to protect the ladders) and a cardboard box in between. This worked well to easily access most of the surface - we just had to flip it once dry to get the ends. The hangers were clamped on an extra piece of pipe - this made it easy to paint everything that was visible (though it's not necessary, just make sure to open them up some prior to painting) (Note: we also painted the screws used to install the hangers, they were just screwed into the side of the cardboard) Also, David is just checking to see if the paint is dry .. you want to make sure to use a respirator while painting, especially since it's close to your face.

Once dry, we installed the hangers on each post.

Since we were going into wood, we just used wood screws, but if you're going into drywall, make sure to screw into the studs or use drywall anchors to support the weight.

Once the hangers are up, remove the front of the hanger (or do so before installing them on the wall) and place the rod inside. Re-install the front of the hanger (make sure to put the drapery rings on prior to installing the front of the hanger).

I forgot to take non-christmasy photos (we were in the process of completing The Home Depot Holiday Style Challenge, in case you're wondering why we're decorating for Christmas in October :) .. and I'm currently in TN, so I couldn't take new photos. So sorry! I'll include better photos with the full living room reveal (mini living room reveal here).

To prevent the rings from slipping off the end, we simply placed a hidden screw behind the end of the rod.

Our preference would have been to connect the two rods in the corner, but since the window on the left is only 6" from the wall, the drapery panel would have been in the window, so we made the best of it!

Total cost for the conduit (rod) and hanger supplies was under $20, SUCH a good price for a long rod!!  It's so easy too!! Only requiring a few cuts!

I hope you'll give it a try!

Did you have a good week!? I hope so! Here are a few things that have caught my eye recently!

Looking for a new fabric source? Try Lewis & Sheron Textiles! Here are a few of my favorites!

Jennifer, The Chronicles of Home rounded up her upholstery essentials! David and I always say, having the right tool for the job makes ALL the difference .. if you're serious about upholstering several pieces, I highly recommend purchasing air tools - life changing!

Selecting lighting for an open floorplan can be tricky .. You don't want everything to match, but you want it to be cohesive .. here's a great example of how to do it successfully - vary the shape (dining room pendant is very linear and open, kitchen pendant is closed and cylindrical), vary one finish, but have one in common (both are brass, but the kitchen pendants add white) and vary quantities (dining room has 1, kitchen has 2).

What Would Sarah Do? | Caning Chair

For today's What Would Sarah Do? I'm sharing a caning chair sent in by Becky. I have a soft spot for caning chairs, I still miss mine that I sold before we left CA!

The frame looks like it's in fairly good condition, so maybe apply a little Restore a Finish to refresh the stain and upholster with a bold geometric like this (remove the tufting).

Or paint the frame white and upholster with this ikat dot fabric (remove the tufting).

Note: fabric content/recommend use isn't provided for this fabric, so I'd recommend ordering a sample or doing more research prior to upholstering to make sure it is durable.

Thanks so much for Becky for sending in her find! If you'd like to know what I'd do with a piece, feel free to email a photo to sarahmdorseydesigns{@}gmail.com with the subject line, what would sarah do? I might include it here next week! Please remove the {} from my email .. inserted to reduce spam :)

Mini Living Room Reveal

It's been a busy few weeks, without much time to share what I've been up to, so I'll have lots of pictures  and tutorials in the next few days! First up, our living room! I'm holding off on a full reveal since I finished just in time for The Home Depot Style Challenge and it's currently decorated for Christmas (and needs some finishing touches).. so a few more weeks :) But for now, here a are few shots that didn't make it into the post.

The room still needs a few finishing touches.. We still need to paint (currently just primer, but it will be white), swap out the light, we LOVE the light we made .. but ultimately decided that it wasn't right for the space, so we ordered this one and we'll put our DIY light somewhere else .. we're also upholstering a sofa, we currently have one from my grandparents, which is going in the basement eventually (reupholstered) .. and our other gray chair needs cushions (my amazing mom sewed two, two to go!) finally, we'll be swapping our the bench for something a little more colorful :) Sounds like a lot, but I'm happy to have a mostly finished space, so we have a place to sit!!

This room has come a long way!

Before:

(living room is the space with lots of windows - bottom right of the photo)

After:

I'll do a full reveal when the space is non-Christmasy and finished :) But, just wanted to share our progress!
