Friday Five

Hey! I hope that you had a great week! Here's a few things that have caught my eye recently.

Have you seen Jonathan Adler's line, Happy Chic at JC Penney? Jonathan Adler is known for using bright, saturated color and bold pattern in his designs. LOVE it!

When we were first in Tennessee three years ago, I'd get a $10 off of a purchase of $10 or more coupon in the mail. We would typically get a box of K-Cups for just a few dollars .. when we moved to CA I missed getting those coupons (maybe it's just a regional thing?) Now that we're back in TN, we get the coupons again and combined with an existing sale, you can get a great deal! I recently got a pair of greek key napkins and a greek key mug for $5 total!

From the Happy Chic collection, I'm loving, this Greek Key shower curtain, this 4 post bed, this bathmat, this nightstand, this Greek Key placemat, and this Greek Key drapery panel

Did you catch Mandi's post from Vintage Revivals on one technique to fix three common painting problems? I'm excited to give it a try next time I paint a piece of furniture. Stop by to see Mandi's tip!

I love to try beauty products based on others recommendations, so maybe you do too! This is nothing new .. but, recently I've been obsessed with Bliss lemon + sage body butter! It's thick, but absorbs well and has the best, light scent. This winter I got a super sized (that's really what it's called) (14 ounce) at TJ Maxx for $17 .. and it definitely helped to get me through that LONG Ohio winter.  This past weekend I just picked up another from Nordstrom Rack for $17. They sell it online at Bliss, Sephora, etc. but TJ Maxx/Marshalls and Nordstom Rack is the best price that I've found.

I'm crazy for this kitchen / entry / laundry transformation found in the current issue of HGTV. It's such a good use of space and a stunning design. If you haven't seen it in print, pick up a copy or check it out online!

I saw these lanterns in Pottery Barn the other week and fell in love with the shape and antique brass finish. These would be great on a patio table or on the floor next to the door! Currently on sale for $31-$78

Recently, I've had a thing for soft, relaxed bedding - perfect for summer! I saw this coral duvet the other weekend at Crate and Barrel and it was love at first sight! (The color is more of a pinky coral in person) The queen size is currently on sale for $59

I hope that you have an amazing weekend!! p.s. look what we found last night!!

Geometric Pencil Cups

We're currently working on another mat board project (my favorite so far! post should be up next week!!) and I realized that I never shared the one that started my obsession - geometric pencil cups. I originally shared it on Tiny Prints, so if you missed the original post, read on!

Want to know the best part? The total cost was zero!! You'll probably find most of the supplies needed to make these pencil cups laying around your house.

Here's how we did it!

Materials needed:

Template (we used this website for the polygon and re sized it in illustrator (3rd PDF on page, top image) you can download our resized version HERE, browse here for more ideas, we just measured and cut for the L pencil holder)
Mat board
Craft glue (we like aleene's fast grab)
Wood Filler / Sanding Block
Painters tape
Paint

1. We printed the shapes needed on a piece of paper.

2. Then we taped the pattern to a piece of mat board and cut it out. (tip: cut out a few small holes in the center of each shape and place a piece of tape there as well - this helps keep it from slipping)

3. Next, we glued it together. To get the angles right, we used painters tape and secured a few together and then adjusted so they were even prior to the glue drying. You want to use a thick glue that grabs fast, but is still workable.

4. Since the shapes weren't cut on an exact angle, we used wood filler to fill in the gaps.

5. Once dry, we sanded it smooth with a fine grit sanding block.

6. Then we painted the outside coral and the inside gold.

and that's it! Pretty easy, right!? The possibilities are endless!

I paired them with Tiny Print's Splendid Splash Notepad

and Tiny Print's Bashful Brushes business cards. I like the how the loose watercolor strokes contrasts the sharp geometric edges of the pencil holders.

I had all of the materials on hand, so total cost was ZERO!! My favorite kind of project!

Also, I love how the light gray printer blends in! (though a warning for Mac users, it was a little tricky to install and we had to reinstall it once .. I haven't had luck with printers recently!)

* This post was in collaboration with Tiny Prints, I was provided with products, all opinions are 100% my own :)

Office Storage Solution | Rolling Printer + Paper Cart

Hi! I hope that you had a great weekend! This week, I plan to get the clutter under control in my office, so I thought it would be the perfect time to share this simple office storage solution that hides ugly printer wires and contains clutter!

We made this a few months ago (so it's my Ohio office) .. if you missed the original post at Infarrantly Creative, read on!

--

I don't know about you, but for me, having a clean and organized office helps me stay motivated and productive! The two biggest sources of clutter in my office are printers and paper.

Today, I'm showing you part 1 of my battle against clutter - how to make a small printer and paper cart. It holds my laser printer and some of the paper and envelopes that I use most often.

Want to build your own?

Here's what you'll need.

(Finished size: 27" H x 22" W x 17" D)

1/2" MDF (1/2 sheet)
1/4" MDF (1/4 sheet)
Thin trim (8' long)
Primer / Paint (White - Sherwin Williams, Alabaster, Coral - Behr, Cool Lava (mixed at Sherwin Williams)
4 Casters (White and Gold from Ace Hardware)
1 1/4" Screws
1/2" Screws
Orbital Sander / Sandpaper
Drill

Table Saw / Chop Saw (or get pre cut at the home improvement store)

Cut List:

1/2" MDF

16.5" x 24" (x2 for sides)
22" x 16.5" (x2  for top + bottom)
21" x 16.5 (back)

1/4" MDF

21" x 16 (x3 for shelves)

First, we got our MDF pre cut. Most home improvement stores will do a certain amount of cuts for free.

Then we measured the shelf placement and glued the screen mold in place so that the shelf would fit on top - a few inches set back from the front so that it would be less visible. If you're placing heavier objects on the shelves you may want to add a few screws as well as an extra support on the back.

Use heavy objects, such as books to weigh it down so the glue sets properly.

Next, start building the box. First, we measured equal spacing for the screws (three per side). When using screws with MDF, it is important to pre-drill and counter sink the holes so that the MDF doesn't split.

Once the exterior box was built (don't forget to cut a small hole in the back for the power wire!), we filled the screw holes and crevices with wood filler and sanded once dry. I also slightly rounded the edges with the sander to give the edges a more finished look.

We opted to leave the shelves removable so that I could easily store a taller object later. Either way, it is much easier to paint the shelves outside of the box.

I wiped it down with a microfiber cloth and started painting. First I primed with Zinsser Cover Stain - it's oil based, so durable, but also stinky and a pain to clean up. For the top coat, I painted a two tone effect. I taped off the edge and painted the inside coral first. Then I painted the outside white. 2 coats each.

Once dry, I turned it upside down, marked my caster placement, pre-drilled holes and attached them with 1/2" screws.

Flip it over, insert the shelves and load it up!

I love how it neatly tucks under my desk, but it would also be great on the side - the casters make it easy to move if needed.

My printer recently broke, so I just ordered a white one - I think it will look perfect here!

This was super simple - only taking about an afternoon. (a little longer taking into account time for the paint to dry)

I hope you'll give it a try!

Damage Free Renter Friendly Draperies with Black Tassel Trim

I originally shared these damage free - renter friendly draperies at East Coast Creative, but I forgot to include a photo of what it looks like on the top, so I included one below!

I love draperies, but since we're only here short term, I didn't want to take the time to hang a rod (and fix it upon moving out) so I used 3M clear hooks for a temporary solution. They are fixed, so I can't open and close them (easily), but there are translucent pull down shades, so it's not needed here.

First I added a black tassel trim (purchased on ebay) to Ikea Lenda white panels (and added a hidden tab for a cafe rod for future use, tutorial here). I sewed, but permanent fabric glue is a great option for those without a sewing machine.

1. Measure desired height, place piece of painter's tape.

2.  Measure spacing. For my 54" wide panel, I spaced mine 3" apart.

3. Place 3M hooks according to directions on package.

4. With upholstery thread sew a couple of loops on the back of the panel. (confirm placement for height taking into account hook placement.

5. Hang your panels on the hooks!

These were SO easy and a perfect temporary solution!!
